Virginia Woolf suggests that the best fiction is written independent of emotion. This is made clear as she condemns fellow fiction writer, Grace Poole, saying, â€Å"She will write in a rage where she should write calmly. She will write foolishly where she should write wisely. She will write of herself where she should write of her characters. She is at war with her lot† (Woolf 70). Woolf identifies Jane Austen as the antithesis to this description. Indeed, much of Virginia Woolf’s writing praises Austen for her ability to disengage such emotion.The art of both authors’ fiction lies in its ability to address societal inequity while maintaining composure, so as not to detract from the validity of the writer or her arguments.
